Day 2 and our first unexpected change in plans

More walls came down today and we hit our first snag.  In the plan, the back wall of the pantry (which was the right side of the 2 white doors in the before photos and shown below)  would be pushed back making room for the fridge and decreasing the size of the laundry area.  When they took off the dry wall, they found that there is a structural support that will be difficult to move.  Of course, difficult can be translated into expensive.  They can remove most of ceiling and do some major relocating or change the cabinet under the peninsula from 18" to 15".  Since the cabinets are already ordered, I don't know if that would result in a delay.  The crew is going to ponder it and see if there are other options.  My idea is to keep the 18" cabinet and just make the walk way 3 inches narrower.  The upside is that we get a few more inches in the laundry.

We found out that white pipe in the dining room wall is a drain. So my dream of a nice high opening has been shot down.  They will need to re-route the drain with an appropriate slope over what is now the door way and then down the right side wing.  The good news is that will be able to have very small wings on each side to keep the opening as wide as possible.   You can see that drain pipe in the Day 2 photos.
